Engaging Debate at the Debate Club: Should EU Membership Rights Be Suspended for Violations of the Rule of Law?

16.12.2024 -

On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the Debate Club hosted an inspiring and controversial discussion, inviting all students and interested individuals to tackle one of the most pressing questions in European politics:

“Should the EU suspend membership rights for states that breach the rule of law?”

The event offered a unique opportunity to gain deeper insights into this complex issue. Two renowned academics joined the debate, enriching the evening with their expertise and compelling arguments:

  • Prof. Dr. Eva Heidbreder, Chair of Multilevel Governance in Europe, led the "Government" team. Her perspective provided clear political science expertise, focusing on how the EU can uphold its values and enforce legal frameworks.

  • Jun.-Prof. Dr. Stefanie Börner, whose work focuses on sociological aspects and the social impacts of European policy, represented the "Opposition." Her approach highlighted the potential societal consequences and challenges of such measures.

The discussion evolved into a lively exchange of ideas, with both sides presenting convincing arguments—ranging from the necessity of protecting European values to the risks of further divisions within the EU.

An Evening of Insight and Debate Culture

The event was a platform for exchanging arguments and an opportunity to emphasize the importance of critical thinking and respectful discourse. Students and participants were encouraged to engage, ask questions, and share their perspectives.

The EUS-Team extends its heartfelt thanks to all participants, especially the two guest speakers, whose expertise and passion made this an unforgettable evening.
