Election of Prof. Heidbreder as Co-Speaker IPSA

In September 2023, Prof. Eva Heidbreder (Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg) was elected Co-Speaker of Research Committee 30 - Comparative Public Policy at the International Political Science Association (IPSA).

RC30 conducts theoretically-informed comparative studies of policies and policy processes with the explicit aim of testing and refining existing models and frameworks as well as, where possible, developing new additions to the policy studies literature.

Workshop "National Coordination and the European Union"

A workshop entitled "National Coordination and the European Union" took place at Villa Vigoni between December 4 and 6, 2023. The aim of Villa Vigoni is to promote exchange between Italy and Germany in the fields of science, politics and culture.

Prof. Dr. Eva Heidbreder from Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and Prof. Hussein Kassim from the University of East Anglia coordinated the event.

The event took place within the framework of the Impact Program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, which supported it together with Villa Vigoni.

Workshop "National Coordination and the European Union"

On 23 and 24 November 2023, the Jean Monnet Chair organized a workshop on "National Coordination and the European Union". The workshop iun hybrid format, took place in the Walloon Church in Magdeburg, while allowing participants to attend the meetings either on site or online.

Report on the event StreitBar „Ihr da oben, wir da unten – ist Politik noch attraktiv für Bürger?"

On November 7, 2023, OvGU hosted a new edition of the StreitBar discussion format on the topic of  „Ihr da oben, wir da unten – ist Politik noch attraktiv für Bürger?" ( in English: "You up there, we down there - is politics still attractive for citizens?"). The discussion centered on the question of what it means for democracy when acceptance of political decisions decreases, citizens withdraw into the private sphere and the general public no longer feels the desire to participate in politics.

In the course of the debate, different perspectives on the causes and consequences of citizens' growing alienation from politics were discussed. Dr. Johannes Gerken from the European Studies team was part of the panel. He discussed with Prof. Dr. Thomas Kliche, political psychologist at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, Tanja Gärber, psychology student at OvGU, and the Mayor of Schönebeck/Elbe, Bert Knoblauch. The StreitBar was moderated by Ulli Wittstock from MDR.
