From Magdeburg to Florence: Research, Growth, and European Connections
We had the chance to talk to Alba Kugelmeier López, a lecturer at Otto-von-Guericke University, who is currently in Florence as a visiting fellow. She shared her experiences, challenges, and valuable advice for students interested in international exchange programs.
1. Where are you right now, and what is your role there?
„I’m currently at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy! I’m here as a visiting fellow, which means I can collaborate with academics from across Europe, share research, and immerse myself in an international academic environment focused on EU studies, law, history, and political science.“
2. What do you enjoy most about this experience?
„What I really love about being here is the chance to engage with experts from different backgrounds, learn from diverse perspectives, and have access to the beautiful libraries, archives of the EU, and resources at the EUI. Plus, Florence itself is a cultural treasure trove – so much history and beauty at every turn!“
3. What challenges have you faced so far?
„A big challenge has been adjusting to a different academic culture and balancing my research while also participating in events and networking. But the learning experience is totally worth it! It’s also challenging to stay on top of all the different projects and deadlines, but it’s part of the growth process.“
4. Why are international exchanges like this important, especially for the EU?
„Exchanges like this are so important because they help build a more interconnected Europe. By working with students and scholars from different countries, we foster collaboration, understanding, and knowledge-sharing, which is exactly what the EU is all about.“
5. When will you return to Magdeburg?
„I’ll be back in Magdeburg in January.“
6. What advice do you have for students interested in exchange programs like Erasmus?
„If you’re a student interested in exchange programs like Erasmus, my advice is to start by visiting our university’s international office. They’ll guide you through the application process and help you find partner universities. It’s also a good idea to check out Erfahrungsberichte (student experience reports)—they’re full of useful insights! Personally, I went to Rovaniemi in Lapland during my Bachelor’s, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It opened up so many new perspectives, both academically and personally.“
Thank you, Alba, for sharing your inspiring insights and experiences with us! We wish you all the best for the rest of your stay in Florence.
