Online Citizens' Dialogue „Lehren aus Qatargate – Wie stärken wir die europäische Demokratie?“
On the 21st of February 2023, starting at 5 pm, the online citizens' dialogue on the topic „Lehren aus Qatargate – Wie stärken wir die europäische Demokratie?“ will take place. The event is organised by Europa Union Deutschland and the Head of our Chair, Prof. Dr. Eva Heidbreder, will participate in this event, the first online citizens' dialogue of this year.
On 9 December 2022, Belgian police seized €1.5 million in cash and arrested several suspects, including the then Vice-President of the European Parliament, Eva Kaili. Since then, investigations into the "Qatargate" corruption scandal have continued. Against this background, the online citizens' dialogue explores the following questions: What role do states like Qatar and Morocco play and what were their targets? Does the EU Parliament need stricter transparency and lobbying rules? What are the chances of Parliament President Roberta Metsola's 14-point plan?
You are cordially invited to participate in the dialogue and to talk to the guest speakers:
- Gabriele Bischoff MEP, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs in the European Parliament, among others.
- Prof. Dr. Eva Heidbreder, Professor of Political Science with a focus on "Multi-level Governance in Europe" at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg
- Timo Lange, campaign manager at LobbyControl
- Markus Preiß, Head of the ARD Europe Studio in Brussels (tbc)
- Moderation: Pia Schulte, freelance moderator
