New Chapter by Prof. Heidbreder on the 2024 European Elections
Prof. Dr. Eva Heidbreder and Dr. Daniel Schade (Leiden University) have contributed a chapter to the edited volume The 2024 European Parliament Elections: A Turn to the Right in the Shadow of War, due to be published by Springer in 2025.
Entitled 'Inter-institutional Competition and the Spitzenkandidaten Procedure: Third Time's a Charm?', the chapter analyses the third application of the Spitzenkandidaten procedure in European elections. The authors explore how the balance of power between the European Parliament and the European Council has evolved, and explain why inter-institutional negotiations over the appointment of the Commission President remain decisive despite the procedure.
Published shortly after the 2024 European elections, the volume brings together contributions that examine the elections from a variety of perspectives. The aim is to provide a timely assessment of various aspects, including electoral systems, campaigning, public perceptions, the role of European parties, the determinants of voting behaviour, and the consequences of the results for European governance. Alongside insights from European studies, the book incorporates approaches from election, party, communication, and governance research. Contributors, who are accomplished academics and civil society actors, present diverse, in-depth analyses based on original research. These analyses offer readers a comprehensive understanding of the actors, issues, and mechanisms that shaped the 2024 European elections.
